Cranbrook is a town situated on the west side of the Kootenay River at its intersection with the St. Mary 's River in southeastern British Columbia, Canada and is the main urban area in the area known as the East Kootenay. As of 2016 the population of Cranbrook is 19,259. It is the location of the headquarters of the East Kootenay Regional District and also the location of the regional headquarters of numerous ministries and agencies of the provinces, especially the Rocky Mountain Forest District. The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel is located in Cranbrook and shows static displays of commuter rail cars from the 1930s.
School District 5 Southeast Kootenay operates public schools, including seven primary schools and two middle schools that feed into the only high school in the city: Mount Baker Secondary School, home to around 1,000 students and 90 staff members. In school district five, Mount Baker is the primary high school. The school board, however, adopted the new system due to falling attendance.
